NSW Government announces Re-opening of Outdoor Pools

by Aquatic Recreation Institute on September 20, 2021

The Aquatics and Recreation Institute (ARI) NSW welcomes the NSW State Government’s announcement today that Outdoor Public Pools can reopen, provided councils have a stringent COVID safety plan approved by NSW Health. We echo Health Minister, Brad Hazzard’s comments that ‘outdoor pools are part of Australian life’.

Matt Griffiths, ARINSW Chairperson, said, “We are pleased that the NSW Government has listened to our calls to prioritise the re-opening of the sector. Whilst we welcome the re-opening of outdoor pools, there is still much work to do with the Government to ensure that the sector is provided with clear guidance around re-opening and is adequately supported during the post lockdown phase. The Aquatic and Recreation sector provides vital services to communities across our State in Sport and Recreation, Education and Training, Water Safety, Local Employment, and Community Health and Mental Wellbeing. Today’s announcement strongly demonstrates the central role that aquatic venues will play in the successful re-opening of local communities as we ease out of lockdown.”

ARINSW strengthens calls for targeted Government support

ARINSW will continue to advocate for greater Government support for the Aquatics and Recreation sector at stakeholder consultations with NSW Treasury, NSW Health and the COVID Taskforce. Matt Griffiths said, “We continue to call on the Government to provide support for the sector, to facilitate the viable re-opening of pools in the short term and secure the long term future of our venues which represent the heart of every community throughout NSW.”
