Get to Know: Suellen Goyne

With over thirty years’ experience in the community, aquatic and recreation industry, Suellen has worked with local government, the private sector, community groups, not for profits and commercial stakeholders, developing a broad understanding of our industry’s framework.

Connecting community wellbeing to leisure is her purpose, environmental sustainability is her passion, and she looks forward to developing our industry's skill base and creating meaningful industry relationships through networking, learning and development. Suellen displays this in her current role as Coordinator of Aquatic Centres with Maitland City Council. 

Suellen joined the ARI Board of Directors in May 2024. 

We asked Suellen a few questions to get to know her more! 

How long have you been in the industry for? I started in 1986, so 38 years. 

What was your first job in the Aquatics & Leisure Industry? A Swim Teacher at Ascot Vale Leisure Centre

What do you love about your job as Coordinator of Aquatic Centres at Maitland City Council? We have a meaningful impact on our local community, by promoting community wellbeing, which is essential for everyone to flourish and fulfil their potential. 

Tell us about your most challenging day so far. Watching my team perform CPR was the most challenging and my proudest work moment. 

What skill would you like to master? Work/Life Balance

What would be your advice for someone starting int he industry? Take the time to learn and use everyone's name and something unique about each person. 

What would make your job easier? More government funding to rebuild pools. 

Who has been your most influential mentor to you? My parents. 

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be? Italy. I'm going in early October this year and can't wait!!!
