
The Young Leaders Advisory Group will aim to:
- Improve communication and consultation between the ARI Committee and aquatic and recreation workers under the age of 35;
- Gain better insights as to the views of young people on those issues impacting our industry;
- Support the transfer of knowledge and stewardship of the current ARI Board of Directors to the next generation of leaders;
- Ensure that the ARI Board and its decision making reflects the diversity and values of the industries it represents; and
- Facilitate wide sector engagement through the hosting of a range of networking and educational events.
Group Membership
The Membership of the YLAG has been designed to provide a balanced range of perspectives whilst retaining an efficient group size. The YLAG will be comprised of a minimum of 4 members and maximum of 8 members that meet the following criteria:
- Under 35 at the time of the time of their application
- Be currently employed in the aquatics or recreation industry; and
- Be a current financial member of the Aquatic & Recreation Institute
The YLAG must have a minimum female representation of 40%.
Selection to the YLAG is by ARI Committee appointment.
Members of the Group should have the ability to provide feedback and recommendations on the various themes and issues relevant to their own experience and position, as well as an understanding of broader state-wide and National implications. The group may seek advice from other stakeholders as appropriate and with the support of the ARI.
Committee Member Role and Responsibilities
The roles of individual members of the YLAG are to:
- Provide input into, and endorsement of, the ARI strategic plan;
- Foster collaboration and engagement across the aquatics and recreation sectors;
- Represent, and provide advice based on, the interests of the industry sector on those issues relevant to the YLAG;
- Gather and provide to the ARI general intelligence for their industry sector/s;
- Advocate the work of the ARI and YLAG within and outside of their work areas;
- Participate in Group activities and meetings, make timely decisions and act to ensure agreed deadlines are met;
- Be open and honest in discussions, while respecting other opinions and views;
- Notify the Chair and members of the YLAG, as soon as practicable, if any matter arises which may be deemed as a conflict of interest;
- Stay up-to-date with meeting discussions and other related documents; and
- ARI Board presentation will be in an advisory capacity only, ARI Board members will not make decision on behalf of the YLAG without consultation.
Term & Commitment
The term of commitment is two (2) years. There after the member is to apply to continue their membership on the YLAG.
Group Members on the YLAG commit to:
- Attending 1x 1-2hr virtual or face to face meeting each month;
- Provide assistance in the development of projects/webinars that may include minimal hours outside of the scheduled monthly meeting; and
- Proactively promoting the YLAG and ARI NSW with its involvement with industry; including being in attendance for events etc.
The Organisation

The Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI NSW) is a not-for-profit professional association of Aquatic and Recreation practitioners, which includes Facility Managers, Industry Specialists, Community Recreation Providers and Recreation Organisations.
We provide support, direction, information and networking opportunities for all members who are involved in sport and leisure services throughout Australia.
What is the purpose of ARI NSW?
The ARI is committed to the following principals:
- To provide a professional body for the leisure industry, which fosters personal, professional growth and development through training programmes and networking.
- To develop and strengthen networks between individuals, suppliers and professional associations involved in the provision of leisure.
- To represent the leisure industry by making submissions on issues of recreational policy that affect the provision and development of leisure resources.
- Encourage efficient effective and socially equitable management of leisure resources.
- Assist in establishing guidelines for leisure opportunities for local communities.
- To provide support to leisure professionals in their delivery of quality leisure services.
- Representation on Industry Boards and Committees.
