The Aquatic and Recreation Institute (ARI) NSW today announced several important leadership changes that will help shape the organisation’s next phase of growth and strategic direction.
Marco Blanco Steps Down as Chairperson
After five years of service on the ARI NSW Board, including his tenure as Chairperson, Marco Blanco has announced he will step down later this year. During his time on the Board, Marco helped lead ARI through a period of significant transformation and supported the organisation’s continued development and industry influence.
“It has been an incredible privilege to serve on the ARI Board for the past five years. Together, we navigated the unprecedented challenges of COVID-19, grew our membership base, and built stronger partnerships with sponsors, industry bodies, and government agencies. I am proud of the advocacy work we’ve undertaken and I leave confident that ARI is well-positioned for continued success under the exceptional leadership of Suellen. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved with ARI and to industry colleagues and partners that I have worked closely with during my time on the Board.”

Suellen Goyne Appointed as New Chairperson
The ARI Board is pleased to confirm Suellen Goyne as the incoming Chairperson. Suellen brings extensive leadership experience to the role through her work with the Maitland City Council, as well as her involvement in ARI’s Strategic Planning process, the National Aquatic Industry Committee (NAIC), local government networks, and as founder of Aqua Women—an initiative supporting women across the sector.
“I am honoured to take on the role of Chairperson at such an exciting time for ARI. We will continue to focus on collaboration and strategic growth, and I look forward to working closely with our members and partners to shape a strong future for our industry. Our strength has always been our people — the lifeguards, swim teachers, duty managers, fitness teams, customer service staff, suppliers, and everyone who keeps our centres safe, welcoming, and thriving. Our workforce is inspired every day by the opportunity to deliver amazing service to our communities. As Chairperson, my commitment is to unite our industry, strengthen our workforce, and build a sector where every worker feels supported, valued, and safe.”
Brad Vella Appointed to ARI Board of Directors
ARI NSW has also confirmed the casual appointment of Brad Vella to the Board of Directors. Brad’s appointment reflects ARI’s commitment to developing emerging leaders and providing meaningful pathways from the Young Leaders Advisory Group (YLAG) into governance roles. Beyond his many connections in the Aquatic & Recreation sector, Brad has been the Chairperson of YLAG since 2023. As the outgoing YLAG Chair, Brad has been influential in ARI’s communications, marketing, and events portfolio and will now work alongside Board Director and trade representative Tania Modde to enhance ARI’s industry engagement.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be joining the ARI Board of Directors. My time as Chair of the Young Leaders Advisory Group was like an apprenticeship into board governance. It gave me the chance to learn, collaborate, and contribute alongside some of the most passionate and dedicated people in our industry. Stepping into the role of Director feels like a natural next step, one that builds on the relationships, insights, and experiences I gained throughout my professional career.”

Nic Hoynes Appointed Chairperson of YLAG
ARI NSW is also pleased to announce Nic Hoynes as the newly appointed Chairperson of YLAG. Nic has been involved with YLAG since its inception and has played an important role in shaping its direction and identity. With a strong passion for developing the next generation of aquatic industry professionals, Nic has been a vocal advocate for increased support, visibility, and opportunities for emerging leaders, particularly those from regional NSW. His commitment to professional development, education, and industry collaboration positions him well to lead YLAG’s continued growth. In this role, Nic will guide the group’s initiatives, strengthen its engagement with young professionals across the state, and help foster clearer pathways into leadership roles within the broader aquatic sector
