ARI - AH Pierce Memorial Facility of the Year Winner

WINNER: Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre, City of Sydney.

 

The winner of the 2021 Aquatic & Recreation Institute (ARI) AH Pierce Memorial Facility of the Year Award is Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre, City of Sydney Council.

The Facility of the Year award is in memory of Harold Pierce who represented his company since 1961 at most of the conferences and seminars that the ARI has held. The AH Pierce Memorial Facility of the Year award will recognise facilities that have implemented best practice processes and provide quality service to the community.

The City of Sydney Council’s vision was for Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre to be an all-inclusive physical activity hub. This has been achieved with the combination of the precinct recreation park and state-of-the-art aquatic leisure centre that supports a physically active and health community.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre is designed to meet best practice standards within the industry. Recognised for its aesthetics, access and renewable design, Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre was recently named a National winner in the Public Architecture category at the 2021 Australian Institute of Architects Awards. Waste, water, and energy initiatives plus design features, make this the first aquatic centre in Australia to hold a 5-star Design and As-Built rating under the Green Building Council of Australia.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre is also the first aquatic centre in NSW to have a fully accredited Changing Places fully accessible toilet and changeroom.

The centre boasts:

  • 50m heated outdoor pool set within a larger, irregular shaped beach pool
  • 25m heated indoor program pool featuring a moveable floor allowing for multi-use space
  • Indoor aqua water play area with a range of interactive toys, including water spraying devices and tipping buckets
  • Heated hydrotherapy pool
  • Health and fitness centre and covered outdoor yoga deck
  • Crèche with indoor play area and direct connection to the indoor aqua water play area
  • Full-size outdoor synthetic multipurpose sports playfield
  • Fully equipped gymnasium and outdoor training circuit
  • Changing Places change facilities
  • Bangala, a public artwork by Jonathan Jones and Aboriginal Elder Auntie Julie Freeman.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre has been embraced by the community and exceeded expected attendance numbers since opening.   The City’s Access Card program is  also available at the centre which provides a reduced rate to aquatic and fitness facilities for refugees, asylum seekers or residents suffering from financial hardship.

Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre is owned by City of Sydney and is operated by Belgravia Leisure.
