Meet the Mentor: Simon Duck

Simon Duck, Aquatic Facilities Manager for Inner West Council

What’s a typical day like for you?

I am currently working with the Aquatics facilities staff in overseeing the Inner West Council Aquatics Facilities. This includes managing large LTS, Fitness and Aquatics programs and all the daily requirements associated with the operations of these facilities.

I am also working with a team of professionals within Council and with an external team on the plans for the redevelopment of the Ashfield Swimming Pool. This is an exciting project and will be a standout facility once completed.

Tell us a little about your career?

Working in the Leisure Industry for over 20 years has been rewarding for many reasons but mostly because of the people I have met during this time. There have been so many committed people I have worked with that have made such a difference to the communities that they operate in. I have had some wonderful staff and colleagues who have worked with me throughout my career so far. Some of my career highlights include working on the redevelopment and opening of 5 Leisure and Aquatics Facilities. Growing the programs and seeing the plans come to life and opportunities being created has been really rewarding.

Can you share a little of what you think has been critical to your career success to date?

Know your numbers and know your business! Understanding all the information from the ground up will help guide you make decisions, look for opportunities and develop strategies.

What attracted you to the Mentor Program and the role of Mentor?

Being part of the industry and to help develop young staff and for them to experience the planning and thinking behind any project.

Can you tell us a little bit about the project your team will be completing?

Developing a special needs Learn to Swim program at a leading Sydney Aquatic Centre that encompasses community links, operational elements and creates a strong profile for this service.

What has been the most surprising part of the Mentor program to date or what have you found most interesting or exciting?

Speaking with the team and getting started on a project with them is exciting and I am looking forward to spending more time with them during the project.

ARI thanks its partners in their generous support of the ARI Mentor Program and the aquatic and recreation industry.
