Meet the Mentor: Jon Colwell

Jon Colwell, Centre Coordinator – Manly Andrew Boy Charlton Aquatic Centre for Northern Beaches Council

What’s a typical day like for you?

Arrive at work 8.30am, check in with the Supervisor on shift for an update on this morning and night before. Check emails reply to what I can. Have a walk around pool deck talk to the lifeguard team, deal with contractors on site as needed. Work on staff training plans, rosters, reports etc. Deal with the unexpected ….(which is most days) meeting with bookings officer conduct WHS inspections, deal with customer enquiries (complaints) any other things I can help the operations team with (backwashes, cover pool deck during breaks etc)

Tell us a little about your career?

Working as part of the Operations Team for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006 & World Championships 2007. Opening the new MABC Aquatic Centre with my team at Manly.

Can you share a little of what you think has been critical to your career success to date?

I’ve been lucky enough to have great mentors in the past venues ive worked all with the right attitude towards their staff.

Having the knowledge of how to treat your staff is critical. Looking out for what they want and need will keep a happy team a successful team.

What attracted you to the Mentor Program and the role of Mentor?

Being able to pass on skills and share experiences I have learnt through my 25 years in the aquatic industry.


What has been the most surprising part of the Mentor program to date or what have you found most interesting or exciting?

The dedication and commitment of the team members
